Q.
I am new to Great Britain stamps and so I am not sure about the sort order of the
'Specialised Items' in your SHOP. Can you give me an explanation?
A.
In general terms the items in this list are organised in chronological order of
issue.
Postal History items (postal covers, or letters, not necessarily with stamps) come
first, followed by Postal Stationery, simply because many of these are older than
stamps. Many of them pre-date 1840 when the first stamps (the 1840 1d. Black and
2d.Blue) were introduced. Postal History and Postal Stationery items are arranged
in chronological order of origin.
Next come the stamps, primarily in chronological order of the British monarchs:
Queen Victoria, King Edward VII, King George V, King Edward VIII, King George VI
and Queen Elizabeth II.
Within these chronological periods the issues are arranged in order of issue for
that reign, based on the numbering system offered by Stanley Gibbons of London,
the originators of the first stamp classification and catalogues. The catalogues
from Stanley Gibbons used for this purpose are:
- For 'SG' numbers: Stanley Gibbons Great Britain 'Concise' Stamp Catalogue, 2006
Edition, and published annually.
- For 'Spec' (or Specialised) and 'SG Spec' numbers: a choice of three catalogues,
depending on the Monarch under whose reign the stamps were issued. These catalogues,
which are published periodically (normally every three years or so), are:
- Stanley Gibbons Specialised Stamp Catalogue, Volume 1 (Queen Victoria), 13th Edition,
published January 2004
- Stanley Gibbons Specialised Stamp Catalogue, Volume 2 (Four Kings - King Edward
VII, King George V, King Edward VIII, King George VI), 12th Edition, published July
2005
- Stanley Gibbons Specialised Stamp Catalogue, Volume 3 (Queen Elizabeth II Pre-decimal
Issues), 11th Edition, published March 2006
(The above quoted catalogues, and others, are available at publisher's prices from
Tony Bellew, post free inland, plus postal charge to overseas addresses. Please
enquire.)
