College Stamps & Postal Stationery
COLLEGE STAMPS were introduced to simplify the accounting within
long established local delivery services operated in limited areas of the Universities
of Oxford & Cambridge. Indeed the rights of the Colleges of these two Universities
to provide their own delivery services apparently date from mediaeval times and
were recognised by Acts of Parliament in 1656 and 1710.
The first College Stamps were introduced by Keble College in 1871: use of stamps
spread to eight Oxford Colleges & three Cambridge Colleges by 1886. In January
that year the Postmaster-General raised objections to the services and as a result
the stamps and accompanying postal stationery were withdrawn on February 11 by agreement
with Oxford college representatives. However, the delivery services continue to
this day and Keble stationery was still in use up to ten years after the agreed
withdrawal.
